PENINSULA BANK Block 23, Building 1 — A ARCHITECTURAL REPORT

by
Richard A. Walker

July 6, 1932

HOUSE: Peninsula BankRECORD BY WHOM: Richard A. Walker
LOCATION: Block 23, Building 1 — ADATE OF RECORD: July 6, 1932
DATE OF TYPING:

EXTERIOR.

GENERAL NOTES:

The Peninsula Bank is a new brick building, designed to meet the requirements of the Peninsula Bank and Trust Company. No ancient foundations were uncovered on the site, therefore no particular design was imposed upon the architects.

The lot is 48'—0" x 110'—6". Its easterly line on North Henry Street is St is 8'—0" west of the existing street line, which makes it conform with the ancient recorded street line.

This location for the Bank was decided upon to accord with the policy of the Williamsburg Holding Corporation, limiting the business area to both sides of the Duke of Gloucester Street and extending east two blocks from the college entrance.

The building and site have been deeded to the Bank in return for the surrender to the Williamsburg Holding Corporation of its original property near the southwest corner of South England and the Duke of Gloucester streets.

The exterior details and principal features of the design closely follow local colonial precedent and harmonize with the general architecture of the business group.

The important high one story unit on the Duke of Gloucester frankly indicates the banking room within, which is further emphasized by the large segmental head windows and the dignified entrance.

The story and a half wing in the rear fittingly expresses the housing of the secondary and accessory units of the Bank.

2

The basement extends under the rear wing only, and contains a fireproof book and filing vault, storage spaces, coal storage, and furnace room.

The exterior walls are faced with "Williamsburg Colonial Face Brick" laid in Flemish bond. In the front unit the bricks for the corners and window jambs are rubbed, and for the window arches, the water table and the brick architrave of the main entrance are gouged. In the rear wing the bricks for the window and door arches are gauged and those for the jambs selected for color and texture. This treatment of the brick is in accordance with local colonial design.

While the building is news its important features and general character are directly influenced by local colonial precedent of the period.

CORNICE — CUPOLA:

The design of the cornice follows local colonial precedent. The architects studied the cornice of Fork Church, Culpepper County, Virginia, especially the modillions. Material for all the above work is Heart Gulf Cypress.

Semi—circular gutters, rectangular leaders, leader heads and straps were installed for utilitarian purposes. All are made of lead sheathed copper, and the gutters are reinforced every 20" with heavy hangers.

13" brick wall laid up on the exterior with Williamsburg Colonial Face Brick in Flemish bond. In the front unit the bricks for the corners and window jambs are rubbed, for the window arches, the water table and the brick architrave for the main entrance are gauged. All wood used is Heart Gulf Cypress. Doors, solid white pine. The dog—eared moulded brick architrave is in character with the general design of the building.

GENERAL NOTES:

INTERIOR:

GENERAL NOTES:

The needs of a modern bank are so different from those of Colonial days that there is no precedent for the general layout.

The design of the cornice, pilasters, chair rail and base in the banking room has been influenced by the treatment of the Great Hall in Stratford, Westmoreland Co., Va. Also the form of the ceiling.

The alternating black and white marble floor in the Public Space bears comparison with the floor in St. John's Church, King William Co., Va., and the mastic tile floor in the rest of the building has been used to conform in general character, to insure durability, and for utilitarian purposes.

The paneled counter fronts are strictly colonial, and the design of the latticed gates between the Public space and the officers space is found in the stair rail of a house at Croaker, Va.

The mouldings used in designing the glazed partitions, the doors, windows, stairs, trim and base are well authenticated and are commonly found in neighboring buildings.

And is by a happy combination of ordinary details, well precedented motifs and accepted units such as doors and windows, the character of Colonial Days has been preserved and new conditions met.

OUTHOUSES

NOTE: See outhouse sheet of Montague House in sample Record. In general give approximate age of outbuilding, record—character, and its former site if moved to its restoration location from another place. If "original" on the site, record it briefly as you would a house. If new give authority or precedent for its design. If new— or moved from some where else— but standing on an old foundation, mention the fact and also note what formerly stood there.)
